Biological Wine: EU approves the rules

The Standing Committee for Organic Production in Brussels has approved a few days ago the regulations that will allow the production of organic wine in the European Union; the rules will be published in the Official Gazette within a few weeks and then will be possible to start the production of certified organic wine. The organic wines must be produced using only organic grapes, whose characteristics are already defined in Regulation (EC) n. 834/2007, while the substances that can be used in the production of these wines are defined in Regulation (EC) n. 606/2009.
The new rules define the main processing techniques to be used or not in the production of organic wines, and establishes the maximum limits for sulfur dioxide, set at 100 mg per liter in organic red wines, compared to 150 mg / l for conventional wine, and 150mg / l for white wines and rosé, whose upper limit is 200 mg / l for conventional ones.
The Commission welcomed the agreements reached with these regulation, which will improve not only the internal market in Europe but also the international one, whose partners have long adopted a policy of regulation and transparency of organic wines. The organic wine regulation complements the European regulations on organic farming.
